Dear Friends,
People are saying that the news coming out of Mexico is all bad.… There is more violence throughout the country; President Calderon stated publicly that 67% of politicians nationally are involved in drug trafficking; tourism has bottomed out; people cannot get decently paid work; the price of basic goods is rising; and the poorest people are yet poorer….
ATZIN is the good news.  Our list of accomplishments in Tlamacazapa is gradually growing in this troubled region that is largely characterized by oppressive poverty, violence, malnutrition and environmental contamination.  For example,
Sixty village women now actively work as program promoters and facilitators every week;
Our programs in health, special needs, income generation, and education all continue to evolve, including the quickly successful Motlan Dental and Oral Health Program and the Tihueliske Education Program for Children and for Women;
The Atzin House/Office is now better staffed with four full-time and three part-time Mexican personnel and three international full-time volunteers, meaning that we are slowly catching up on a long backlog of “to-dos,” and pushing ahead into new areas, including the introduction of ecological rocket stoves and legal documentation of the rights of village women to land and property;
Our “Tlamacazapa Weavers of Life: the People, their Work and their Struggle” Photo Exhibition, a collection of remarkable photographs of village life all taken by Rodrigo Cruz, is now touring and will appear for a month at a time in Taxco, Acapulco, Chilpancingo, Cuernavaca, San Pablo and Mexico City.
There is much more.  Please sit back and watch “Tlamacazapa,” our first DVD and webcast, savoring the fact that so many people have contributed to this work with passionate compassion and persistent, definitive actions.  Your support, in whatever form or size, is always needed and gratefully appreciated.  Please note that online donations are now possible at www.atzin.org.  In turn, our commitment is that money and goods are well used -- directly on programming, directly on the people so affected by poverty and slow poison.
Warmest greetings from the heart of Mexico,
Susan Smith, Director
